The Astaria Crochet Bag – Inspired by Nature, Designed for Everyday Life

  • Post category:Patterns

Every pattern has a story — and the Astaria Bag is no exception. This design was born from my love of nature and the simple joys of summer days spent in my garden and wandering into town.

I noticed some rounded leather handbags popping up in shops, and while I admired their clean shape, I wasn’t convinced leather was the right choice for me. I wanted something more textural, lighter, and summery — a bag that felt like an extension of the garden itself, practical enough for everyday errands but beautiful enough to turn heads.

I often walk into town rather than drive, so having a bag that’s not just pretty but also roomy enough to carry groceries or small purchases is essential. When I design, I start with what works for me—because I know there are many of you who share similar tastes and needs. It’s about creating pieces that feel personal yet practical, something you’ll love and use day after day. I start every design with a sketch at my desk.

From this personal approach , I created two versions: a smaller cotton handbag perfect for dog walks and casual outings, and a larger raffia tote designed to be my go-to for weekends, market trips, or beach days. Both celebrate texture, shape, and a little bit of nature’s effortless beauty.

Tester Showcase: Real-Life Versions of the Astaria Bag

I’m so grateful to the wonderful testers who brought the Astaria Bag to life in their own unique ways. Thanks to Woolzone.co.uk for organizing this amazing group! Here’s a peek at some of their versions:

Helen unbelievably made three bags during testing: two in cotton, one cream and one mustard (both Drops Paris) for the smaller handbag, plus the larger version in a cherry-coloured Stylecraft Recycled Chunky yarn, adding her own variation on the i-cord handle.

Sue created the larger version in Stylecraft Recycled Chunky Pumpkin, showcasing the bag’s roomy potential in a non-raffia yarn. This would be lovely for autumn, pairing it with tweedy jackets, jeans and boots.

Karen worked up the smaller handbag in a beautiful Drops Paris Amethyst, perfect for everyday use. I don’t usually wear purples, but this amethyst colour is somehow almost a neutral, and I think would look beautiful paired with dusty pink bodysuits and natural linen skirts. I photographed this in our garden just as the roses have started coming out… I popped some mint (Mentha Longifolia) in with the roses for the photograph  – what a happy combination.

The testers loved how quickly the bag sides came together with just nine rounds, and the star-flower texture kept things interesting without being overwhelming. They also gave great feedback, like continuing the bag joining stitches all the way around for a smoother finish.

Key Features of the Astaria Crochet Bag

  • Two Sizes, Two Styles: Choose between a chic smaller handbag made with soft cotton yarn, or a spacious, summery basket tote crafted with raffia yarn — perfect for beach days or market hauls.

  • Textured Star-Flower Motif: Adds dimension and eye-catching detail that feels like a natural extension of floral inspiration.

  • Rounded, Comfortable Shape: Designed to sit nicely against your body whether you’re walking or out and about, combining elegance with function.

  • Durable I-Cord Handles: Sturdy and balanced, these handles give structure and comfort, making the bag easy to carry all day.

  • Uncommon stitches but with help: The pattern includes some fun, slightly uncommon stitches that add interest but stay approachable with illustrations and the video tutorial is helpful for those feeling a bit hesitant with some of the stitches.
