If you love sewing garments with movement, comfort, and personality — the Sarcoco Tiered Culottes might just be your new favourite project! Whether you’re a beginner looking to grow your skills or a confident maker who loves experimenting with design, this pattern is all about creativity and flow.
For my latest version, I used a gorgeously soft washed denim from Minerva (with that chambray look we all love). I also made a few personal tweaks — and I filmed the whole process as a step-by-step YouTube sew-along, which you can watch now:

My Favourite Sewing Tips from This Project
These culottes involve some big, swishy pieces — especially the gathered panels. I share lots of tips in the video, but here are a few highlights:
1. Pre-shape curved seams with a single line of stitching
Before folding and pressing a curved pocket edge (especially the external curved pockets I used here), try running a line of long straight stitches within the seam allowance. Gently pull the bobbin thread to ease in the curve before pressing — it gives you a neater, more controlled shape with less fuss.
2. Use your overlocker to gather large sections
If you’ve got an overlocker (serger), gathering the tiered panels becomes faster and neater. With the right tension, stitch length, and differential feed settings, you can gather and finish the raw edges in one pass. I show exactly how I set up my Janome 9300DX for this in the video.
3. Topstitch after gathering
To make your gathered seams sit flatter and add a beautiful finish, press the seam upwards and add a line of topstitching above the gather. It also helps keep everything in place through wear and washing.
4. Try a fitting before adding the waistband
The final waistband adds height, so before attaching it, pop the culottes on and check you’re happy with the rise. If needed, you can trim the top edge before finishing.
5. Choose the right pockets for you
The original pattern doesn’t include pockets, but I’ve added two styles from my new Pocket Pattern Collection — which includes 8 versatile pocket shapes to mix and match with your wardrobe.
